After a very busy Saturday afternoon, The Grand Nairobi Bike Race dubbed as the Jubilee Live Free Race 2022 was finally here with us. The event was scheduled for the 20th of November and the participants started streaming in at KICC grounds slightly before 6 am all ready to go.
The competition had attracted cyclists from various parts of the country as well as some from wider East Africa. They were cyclists from all cadres; from professionals to recreational cyclists and even children. There were several categories to suit each cyclist such as the main race, black mamba, para-cycling, kids race, and a family fun race.
The Grand Nairobi Race was first done in 2019 in partnership with Miti Alliance. Following proceeds from the race, Miti Alliance was able to plant 2000 trees in 2020 at Gikambura Primary School and I Africa Children’s home in Kiambu County. The goal for was to: Ride for sustainable cities & communities, Ride for the environment, Ride for health but most importantly, Ride4FUN!
Prior to the race kickoff on 20th Nov 2022, the attendees were entertained by a group of cultural dancers who uplifted the mood with their traditional drums and loud chants. The competition was officially opened at 9 am by the Nairobi County Governor H.E Johnson Sakaja at the Kenya International Convention Centre(KICC).
It was a hype of activity and the air was bustling with excitement as each cyclist gave out their best. The winners of the race were later awarded prizes from a kitty of KSH 1.2 million distributed to the top 10 finishers in each of the categories. The award ceremony was followed by entertainment by artists Kagwe Mungai and Nviiri the Story Teller.
Various race partners were provided with a booth at KICC grounds to display their services ranging from Bike vendors, Food vendors, and medical health checks. The Miti Alliance team got the opportunity to sell fruit trees and herbs to attendees as well as sign up new volunteers.
Having been our second time partnering with GNBR and this time in conjunction with Jubilee Insurance as well, we are excited to see the enthusiasm this race has brought into the cycling community! We continue to urge every Kenyan to use their favorite sport/ recreation activity to change their environment for good!
